A 10-story downtown building that for years was home to the Multnomah County Health Department will be remade into 100,000 square feet of refreshed office space.
Seattle developer Urban Renaissance Group and Gaw Capital USA acquired the former Gladys McCoy Building, which sits at 426 S.W. Harvey Milk St. for $9.85 million in late 2018. The county sold the building and moved the department into a new building last month.
The partners are planning a full renovation of the building, including an expanded lobby, new elevators, showers, lockers, bike storage, a tenant lounge and new HVAC, plumbing and electrical.
An 800-foot skylight will also be added to the top floor.
In addition to the physical work being done on the building, URG and Gaw Capital are also renaming the building. It will now be known as the J.K. Gill Building, in honor of the J.K. Gill Company, an office supply and book company that occupied the building for more than 60 years.
“We’re very pleased to reintroduce the J.K. Gill name to the Portland office market,” said URG vice president, regional general manager, Tom Kilbane, in a release. “J.K. Gill was the largest distributor of books in the Northwest and the go-to place for school supplies for generations of Portlanders.”
The work should wrap up by June 2020.
Trevor Kafoury, Al Kennedy and Autumn Brice from CBRE will handle leasing for the revamped space.
URG’s recent Portland projects include the renovation of the 1320 Broadway building and the under-construction Press Blocks project in Goose Hollow.
